Perhaps take a look at how /u/DustinBrett solved it on his desktop page (www.dustinbrett.com). He's using a web worker to run the background canvas in a different thread to increase performance (at least that's how I understand it, but I'm just a hobbyist). The source code can be found at https://github.com/DustinBrett/daedalOS .
