  • Show HN: Reams, a deeply superficial RSS iOS app, React Native, open source
    1 project | news.ycombinator.com | 15 Mar 2022
Reams has taken me over four years, grabbing 15 minute opportunities between full-time job, raising a family, the pandemic, etc. I've used RSS for years, but it's always bugged me that reading RSS feeds feels like a chore, a pile of paperwork I have to get through, instead of a pleasure. I love reading, and I love the experience of losing myself in text and images, so I wanted to make something that made that possible.

Reams has an algorithmic layout engine that does lots of text measuring and other calculations to make nice cover pages for stories that have good images. It also uses Tensor Flow to do face detection on images so that if I have to crop them it centres the largest face. It also works really hard to make the typography of each story as beautiful as possible.

It supports Feedbin, Feed Wrangler and has its own built-in RSS client, a Safari share extension for feed detection and to save pages in Reams to read later, plus all the usual bells and whistles (full text view using the Mercury parser, dark mode, etc.)

The source code is at https://github.com/admbtlr/reams. Oh, and I made a website and movie for it at https://reams.app/.

    Hope you like it!
